WildStar speculative script

Yet another script I wrote, playing with someone else’s world.

Setting:

Carbine Studio’s Wildstar.

Stage:

A busy spaceship parking lot, packed full with exile ships.

Characters:

– Linette Barlowe: A 12-year old girl who, as the new kid on the block, gets picked on by THE CHILDREN. She is a

Spellslinger with a little training.

– THE CHILDREN (Child 1, 2 and 3): Exile Ragamuffins playing in the parking lot.

o CHILD 1: An Engineer child. The most temperamental of the bunch, and the most spoilt. Builds his own toy robots. Oldest of the trio (10 year-old).

o CHILD 2: An uninitiated Esper child. Timid on his own, but emboldened by his friends. The smartest of the trio.

o CHILD 3: Future Soldier. The youngest of the trio. Quiet, reserved, and absolutely gung-ho in a near psychotic way when he lets loose. Perceptive.

Synopsis:

THE CHILDREN and LINETTE play their game of Peacekeers & Bandits (cops & robbers) in the parking lot of the space-station known as Waystation McTavish.

EXT. DAY THE PARKING LOT – LATER

CHILD 3 stands his ground bravely, face twisted into a roar, as he holds down the trigger of his automatic suckerdart chaingun.

CHILD 3

(yelling)

YEARRRRRGH! GET SOME! GET SOME!

CHILD 2 stands his ground, holding a toy gun in each hand. Sucker darts fly past him while stands in a wide, dramatic stance. Darts stick onto him randomly.

CHILD 2

(theatrically authoritative)

Stop in the name of the Peacekeepers!

CHILD 1 leaps between the two on the back of a four-legged robot. The robot has two gun attachments it aims at CHILD 2 and CHILD 3. CHILD 1 holds a shotgun, which he swings between them.

CHILD 1

(yelling)

Nuh-uh! I’m the peacekeeper here, and the two of you will give up! In the name of justice!

THE CHILDREN are locked in a three-way Mexican stand-off, even if CHILD 3 and CHILD 2 still have sucker-darts sticking onto them. The robot, turning its eye from one child to the next, is the one moving the most.

LINETTE

(off-screen) Uh, so…

The view pulls back, bringing LINETTE into view as she stands some distance away from the three children. LINETTE is holding two toy pistols.

LINETTE

(slowly)

Who are you supposed to be?

THE CHILDREN

(in imperfect unison) A Peacekeeper!

THE CHILDREN glare at each other, guns at the ready.

LINETTE

(knowing she’ll regret

asking)

And who am I supposed to be?

THE CHILDREN

(in perfect unison) A bandit!

THE CHILDREN look at each other again. The view closes in on the three of them while they still point their guns at one another. The robot look at CHILD 2, then at CHILD 3, and then at LINETTE. After a beat, the robot turns its guns towards LINETTE.

SMASH-CUT TO BLACK

CHILD 2

(off-screen, yelling) After that criminal!

CHILD 1

(off-screen, yelling) You won’t escape justice!

CHILD 3

(off-screen, yelling) GET SOOOME!

FADE IN:

EXT. DAY – THE PARKING LOT – MOMENTS LATER

LINETTE appears as she runs around the landing strut of a large ship and into a makeshift alleyway. She is running as fast as she can. A hail of sucker darts fills the space behind her.

CHILD 3

(sing-song voice) I saw you!

CHILD 3 runs around the corner, stops, levels his toy chaingun at LINETTE, and the barrels spin up. LINETTE glances over her shoulder and ducks behind the fin of another ship. The fin is quickly covered in sucker-darts.

CHILD 3

(maniacal)

NOWHERE TO RUN! BWAHAHAHAH!

LINETTE readies her toy pistols, takes a deep breath, and waits for the sound of CHILD 3’s chaingun to stop. When the barrels click to a stop, she leaps out of cover, and while running away, aims back, and fires both her guns. Suckerdarts bounce off of CHILD 3’s head, making him reel back.

CHILD 3

(surprised)

Hey!

LINETTE jumps onto the down-tilted wing of another ship and keeps running. CHILD 2 comes up alongside LINETTE, running parallel.

CHILD 2

Stop, bandit!

CHILD 2 brings up his gun and starts shooting at LINETTE, making her flinch. LINETTE keeps running.

LINETTE

(irritated)

Peacekeepers are supposed to try to catch bandits before shooting them!

CHILD 2 hesitates a moment, scowls, and starts shooting at LINETTE again.

CHILD 2

Then stop running away! Surrender, bandit!

LINETTE turns on her heel to run straight at CHILD 2, face grim.

LINETTE

In a hogbeast’s eye!

CHILD 2 is caught by surprise by LINETTE’s charge. CHILD 2 keeps shooting. LINETTE jumps at the last moment, doing a mid-air flip over CHILD 2’s head.

LINETTE peppers CHILD 2 with sucker darts while CHILD 2 stumbles a few more steps. LINETTE lands in a crouch, spins dramatically and shoots CHILD 2 in the back.

CHILD 2 falls face first onto the ground.

CHILD 2

(on the ground, upset) What does that even mean?!

LINETTE runs down between two other ships on a path perpendicular from the one she was on. CHILD 2 is joined by CHILD 3 and BOTH chase LINETTE along the same path.

CHILD 2

(running)

We need more peacekeepers!

CHILD 3

(running)

Or bigger guns.

CHILD 2 glances over at CHILD 3, down at the toy chaingun CHILD 3 is carrying. After a beat, CHILD 2 trips. CHILD 3

doesn’t react at all.

LINETTE grins over her shoulder while she keeps running away from CHILD 2 and CHILD 3. When LINETTE turns the corner at the end of the path, she skids to a halt. CHILD 1 is blocking her path, still straddling the robot, which points its arsenal straight at LINETTE. The robot narrows its eye to a glare.

CHILD 1

(grinning cruelly)

Got you now, evildoer…

CHILD 2 and CHILD 3 arrive as well, cornering LINETTE between the wall of the parking lot and the ships.

CHILD 2

Give up and face your sentence!

CHILD 3

(gleefully)

Death by firing squad!

LINETTE narrows her eyes, straightening up to her full height, toy guns at her hips. LINETTE isn’t playing anymore.

LINETTE

(darkly)

Go ahead.

(arching a brow)

Try it.

THE CHILDREN glance at one another for half a beat, straighten too, and aim.

CHILD 1

Peacekeepers, fire!

In slow motion, CHILD 3s chaingun barrels spin up, CHILD 2

fires two darts, and CHILD 1’s robot lets loose a volley with a friendly POP-POP-POP noise.

LINETTE, simultaneously, take a step towards THE CHILDREN.

A RUNE PORTAL forms in front of her. When she steps through it, another RUNE PORTAL forms behind THE CHILDREN and the rune effect flies through them.

CHILD 1

(surprised)

What th’-!

In normal-time, THE CHILDREN are blown away by a gust of wind that knocks all of THE CHILDREN to the ground and the robot on its side. LINETTE appears through the other portal, turns into a crouch while the momentum still carries her forward, and peppers THE CHILDREN with darts.

LINETTE

(chiding)

That’s what you get for being bullies!

THE CHILDREN pick themselves up slowly, shaking off their shock one at a time.

CHILD 2

(morose)

But we were the peacekeepers…

CHILD 1

They’re supposed to be the good guys! They’re supposed to win!

LINETTE

(holstering her toy pistols)

That doesn’t mean they can be bullies!

CHILD 3 is the last to react, peering suspiciously at LINETTE.

CHILD 3

(slowly)

What was that?

LINETTE

(abruptly defensive)

What was what?

CHILD 2

Yeah, that… thing you did. What was it?

LINETTE

(admitting, exasperated)

My dad told me I shouldn’t use my spells unless I really had to, but you guys were being mean!

CHILD 1

That’s not fair!

CHILD 2

You were using your robot. That wasn’t fair either

CHILD 1

Well yeah, but that’s different. I *made* my robot.

LINETTE

I had to learn my spell! It wasn’t easy, either! Not everyone can do it, you know…

CHILD 3

It *was* awesome.

CHILD 1 and CHILD 2 nod after thinking for a moment.

CHILD 1

(grinning)

Yeah, it was.

In the background, a music box begins to play its tune.

CHILD 1

Do you know any more?!

CHILD 2

Yeah, show us another one!

LINETTE

(defensively)

I’m not supposed to! Spells aren’t for games.

CHILD 1

(complaining)

Awh, come on! You just used that one to cheat already.

CHILD 3

We’ll tell on you.

CHILD 2(momentarily shocked, then on-board)

Yeah! We’ll tell!

LINETTE glares at THE CHILDREN for a moment, then narrows her eyes and crosses her arms.

LINETTE

Fine! I’ll show you one. But I’ll need more darts, and something that we can break. And only if you promise not to… (pausing to listen to the music, murmuring) Can you hear that?

THE CHILDREN look up, tilting their heads as they try to catch the melody. LINETTE listens intently. The music box’s melody continues to play in the background, echoing from beyond the wall next to them.

LINETTE

(quietly) Mom…

LINETTE turns on her heel and walks along the wall, following the music.

CHILD 1

Hear wha — Hey! Don’t spaz out!

CHILD 2

What is she up to now?

CHILD 3

She’s weird.

LINETTE reaches a doorway to the RESIDENTIAL QUARTER of the station. LINETTE hesitates, looking at the narrow streets beyond the doorway. The music box’s melody reaches its midpoint. THE CHILDREN catch up with her.

CHILD 3

We’re not supposed to leave the parking lot. It’s not safe.

LINETTE listens to the music for a few seconds longer.

CHILD 2

If the grownups come back and we’re not here they’re going to be angry.

CHILD 1

If they come back and you’re gone, they’re going to be angry at us!

LINETTE glances back to THE CHILDREN. THE CHILDREN look u at her, frowning. The music box continues to play, gradually winding down.

LINETTE

It’s almost over!

(to THE CHILDREN)

I won’t be gone long. Stay here!

CHILD 2

Don’t!

LINETTE runs through the door into the RESIDENTIAL QUARTER.

THE CHILDREN watch her go.

CHILD 2

Alright, now we’re in trouble…

CHILD 1

(turning to CHILD 2) I’m the oldest again, so I’m in charge, right?

CHILD 2

(hesitating) I guess?

CHILD 1

Then we’re going after her. C’mon.

CHILD 2

Why would we do that?

CHILD 1 stops in his tracks and looks back at CHILD 2.

CHILD 1

Because we’re the peacekeepers.

CHILD 1 takes off running after LINETTE. CHILD 2 watches in horror. CHILD 3 follows after CHILD 1.

CHILD 3

(from the other side of the door)

We’re already in trouble anyway.

CHILD 2 glances back towards the ships, then runs after CHILD 1 and CHILD 3.

CHILD 2

Wait! You’re going to get lost!

CHILD 2 looks back at the parking lot, now empty. He takes off after CHILD 1 and CHILD 3.

FADE TO BLACK.
